Parents Abandon Baby Upon Learning Her Rare Skin Condition

Every parent wants to have healthy, normal looking children. It is devastating to learn that your baby, whom you've taken care of for a long period of time wouldn't turn out the way you expected them to be. There are many cases of children being abandoned by their parents for looking differently.

Recently, 25 year-old Mamata Dode gave birth to a baby girl during her 7th month of pregnancy. She and her husband, Ajay Dode were expecting a healthy child like their older daughter Payal who is now 3 years old. The couple were not informed by their doctor of any problems during their check-ups, which is why they were horrified upon seeing the new born.

The baby, who is yet to be named, was only 800 grams upon delivery and possessed a rare 'wrinkly' skin disorder. Shocked and embarrassed by the turn out, the mother refused to acknowledge the baby - not even taking the time to feed nor visit her in the hospital. Even the father could not find himself to accept the little one.

Thankfully, the baby's paternal grandfather Dilip Dode was willing to look after his grandchild despite her condition. He claims that it was not the baby's fault for looking that way, it wasn't her choosing.

"It is not her fault to have been born differently, and I will not throw her away for her disease", says Mr. Dode.

He brought her to a hospital in Mumbai a 138 kilometer drive from their village. The hospital responded to the needs of the child, giving her free medical services as well.

Dr. Minnie Bodhanwala, hospital CEO agreed to shoulder all the costs her the child's treatment which expected to be around 500,000 Rupees. They reported that the baby was severely hydrated when she was brought to the hospital and any delay would have been proven fatal. The baby is said to be responding well to the treatments but is still under observation. The medical team in Wadia Hospital are going to do Karyotyping on the baby to determine what exactly is wrong with her and whether her condition is genetic or not.

More often than not, society has developed a negative stigma concerning physical anomalies. It poses a big impact on the decision making of parents who give birth to babies with unfortunate physical afflictions.

While some parents would accept and love their baby wholeheartedly, others would choose to turn their backs away from the situation. Not taking responsibility and deserting one's own child just because of his/her appearance shows cowardice. And in this cowardice, it this the baby who will suffer plenty.
